About Us
Welcome to our cockapoo home. I'm Karen, married to Charles for over two decades (wow.) We have a place in the mountains outside Los Angeles with land and a stream as well as a "pied a terre" (apartment, lol,) in the heart of the city. We are both lifelong animal lovers as are all of our family members. It was my idea to start raising cockapoos. Growing up in Florida, I always wanted a cocker spaniel, which we could not afford, so I was given my beloved "Bo," a black cocker spaniel mix and later another black cocker mix, "Rascal," got me through my tough early teens. In high school my friend Susan gave my family our first cockapoo, a black first generation boy named "Toby Tucker." We were all crazy about that dog. My mom and I used to say that we wanted to have a pet shop one day (before that became much frowned upon.)
When I met Charles he had pug dogs, having grown up with boxers he wanted something similar that was small enough to take to college. We had two, then four, then rescued one more. They all lived to be quite old, the last one is still alive and about 19 years old. Unfortunately I am allergic to pugs. So when my favorite girl passed away I retired the breed and ran straight out to get myself a cockapoo from a local ad; NOT the best way to get a dog, now I know.
I surprised Charles with Bailey aka "Bebe," my darling cockapoo girl, about five years ago. My elderly parents lived downstairs from us and we all just lost our minds over her. She was the softest, sweetest, most beautiful puppy. She still is! And she has produced some of the prettiest puppies we've ever had. That's how my passion for this wonderful breed was rekindled. Every time Charles came into the office in our house I was having an "attack of the puppies" and was on line looking cockapoos. In the meantime, my father passed away and Mom got very ill - the cockapoos seemed heaven sent and got me through some very tough losses. Out of all the sadness Beachwood Canyon Cockapoos came to be. The dogs and puppies pull us into the moment and remind us to relax, play, and just live. On top of that, they are so darn adorable I can hardly stand it. AND, NO MORE ALLERGIES! Yay. Also, they haven't had the problems our purebred dogs have had.
During this time I was fortunate to meet some wonderful breeders over the internet: Shannon, Lisa, and Jeneane. These women, with about 50 years breeding experience between them, mentored and befriended me - taught me everything I know about cockapoos, including understanding something about the cocker and poodle parents. They are available in the middle of the night if there is trouble whelping a litter, or anytime if there are questions about improving the quality of my puppies.
So that's our story, mostly my story, I guess. Charles is now my full partner taking care of our dogs, birthing puppies, talking to our puppy families on the phone. He trains all the puppies to come to him when he calls "Pretty Puppy" and sings them a pretty puppy song which includes rap verses. He's pretty funny. We both have our own businesses, I am a full time therapist in Beverly Hills and he is, well, he hates me to talk about him on the internet!
This year we are very excited about the quality we are adding to our breeding program. We improve constantly as we learn more. Take a look at our moms, dads, puppies past and present here on our new website. If we can answer any questions feel free to email, call, facebook message us.
We do not keep our dogs in runs or kennels. They are outside in the yard during the day, come in and out of the house, and sleep in the house at night-some in their own crates, some in bed with us, and some under the bed. It's a cockapoo party pretty much all the time. Marta, our housekeeper, helps keep things running smoothly and Jasmine, our groomer, helps us keep the babies in shape. The puppies are born in the bedroom, raised in the bedroom until they are old enough to move out to the living room, and we love on them every day of their lives until you take them home. Hope you love our cockapoo puppies as much as we do.
